…at the intersection of good lives and aged care

Framework

Social role valorisation

Social Role Valorisation (SRV) is a framework developed by Wolfensberger for considering how older people (and particularly vulnerable older people) might live good lives. It “borrows” from how the rest of us do this by focusing on securing roles that deliver the good things of life. SRV “preferences” individuals, communities and services to work in ways that imagine roles for older people, create role opportunities and build the competencies, reputations, networks and supports that older people need to secure roles. And this requires and shapes a much more effective and uplifting way of providing care and support, even for the frailest older people. By using SRV we can also gain a deep understanding of why so many of the users of well-intentioned and well-resourced community and aged care services fail to thrive. And what to do about it, that might work for a change.
